the competition story

Early in 2011, the Victorian AILA Advocacy Committee put forth an Expressions of Interest to Councils across Melbourne and Victoria to suggest sites for a competition directed at raising the quality of our streets and promoting improved sharing between all modes of transport that use them.

Six quality submissions were received from a range of Councils across Metropolitan Melbourne including Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Moreland, Kingston, Frankston and Yarra Ranges.  A robust assessment of these were undertaken until Lilydale was declared the preferred site. Why?

URBANISM
Potential for increased densities in the heart of town from large tracts of underutilised private holdings, the competition may generate private or state investment

OPPORTUNITY
A serious amount of underutilised carparking, underutilised road space, poor Engineering resolution, large reserve (60m)

NATURAL SYSTEMS
Olinda Creek offered a natural system right in the heart of town

TREE BOULEVARDE
Offers a small version with some big questions being asked about Melbourne’s boulevards

ALL THE PIECES
As the Chamber of Commerce (Traders Assoc.) representative indicated, Lilydale has ‘all the bits’ for a great place, but it just doesn’t work physically, resulting in a lack of social, economical and environmental confidence.

NEED
A lack of State or Federal interest, pretty much all other sites have had Major Projects or the like investment
